Retail job interview practice

Applying to be a cashier, sales associate or stocker? Retail managers mostly want to know three things: will you show up, will you be friendly with customers, and are you willing to learn.

This guide covers what a retail interview is usually like, how to prepare, and sample questions. Then practice free by typing your answers to a friendly AI interviewer.

What to expect

What the interview is like

Retail interviews are often short, sometimes 10 to 20 minutes with a store manager or shift lead, and sometimes right in the store. Some stores do a quick group interview or a phone screen first.

Expect questions about your availability, why you want to work there, how you would help a customer, what you would do with an upset shopper, and a time you worked hard or worked on a team. If you have never had a job, examples from school, sports, clubs or home are completely fine.

Game plan

How to prepare

  1. Know your availability, including school, sports and other activities, and be honest about it.
  2. Visit the store or website so you can say one specific thing you like about it.
  3. Think of two short stories: a time you worked hard on something, and a time you helped someone or worked on a team.
  4. Practice what you would say to a customer who is upset or who asks for something you cannot find: stay calm, listen, and get help when you need it.
  5. Prepare one question to ask at the end, such as what a typical shift looks like.

What do retail managers look for in a first-time employee?
Mostly reliability, a friendly attitude with customers, and willingness to learn. They expect to train you on the register and the store's rules.
