First job interview practice

Your first job interview can feel like a big deal, but the questions are predictable. Managers want to know if you will show up, if you are friendly, and if you are willing to learn. You can show all three without any work experience.

This guide works for almost any entry-level job, internship or volunteer role. It covers what to expect, how to prepare, and sample questions you can practice free by typing.

What to expect

What the interview is like

Most first-job interviews are short conversations with a manager or supervisor. Some are by phone or video, and some happen when you drop off an application.

You will probably hear "tell me about yourself", "why do you want to work here", "when are you available", a question about a time you worked hard or worked on a team, a "what would you do if" question, and "do you have any questions for us".

Game plan

How to prepare

  1. Write a three-sentence answer to "tell me about yourself": what you are doing now (school, activities), one thing you are good at, and why you want this job.
  2. Pick two or three real examples from school, sports, clubs, volunteering or home that show you are reliable, hardworking and a good teammate.
  3. Know your availability and be honest about it.
  4. Prepare one question to ask, such as what training looks like or what makes someone great in this job.
  5. Practice saying your answers in two to five sentences, then stop. Short and clear beats long.
