PA school MMI practice
A growing number of physician assistant programs use multiple mini interviews. Instead of one long conversation, you rotate through short timed stations that test judgment, ethics and communication.
This guide covers the format, how to approach each station type, and sample stations from the RookiePrep PA station bank.
What to expect
What the interview is like
At each station you read a scenario, then respond to an interviewer or interact with an actor. Stations are timed and scored independently, and you cannot go back once time is called.
PA MMIs often include ethical dilemmas in clinical settings, role-plays with patients or colleagues, teamwork tasks, healthcare policy questions and personal questions. Details vary by program.
Game plan
How to prepare
- Plan during the reading time: name the central conflict, the stakeholders and a couple of possible actions.
- Reason out loud. Show you would gather facts, respect autonomy and confidentiality, and involve the supervising physician or appropriate resources.
- Stay within the PA role. Strong answers show collaboration and knowing when to escalate.
- In role-plays, focus on the person in front of you: listen, acknowledge feelings and agree on a next step.
- Rehearse with a strict timer so you can pace an answer without rushing or running dry.
Sample stations
3 stations to try
From the RookiePrep station bank (40+ stations for this interview). Read the prompt, give yourself about two minutes to plan, then answer out loud.
- Ethical dilemma
A patient is diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection and refuses to tell their partner, who is also your patient. They ask you to keep it completely confidential. Discuss the PA's obligations.
- Role-play
You are a PA student on rotation. A patient with kidney failure has told the team he wants to stop dialysis. His family is pushing him to continue. The physician has asked you to sit with him and understand his thinking. Speak with the patient.
- Teamwork
Using words only, teach the interviewer how to tie a shoelace. Assume they have never done it before.
